Abstract

Over the last few years, design has increasingly entered the realm of health, thanks to the connection with other disciplines, such as science and medicine.

Information design, due to its ability to translate complex and invisible data into visible and understandable ones, can put the interpretative filter of contemporary scientific research over product, services and communicative artifacts, useful to transmit to people knowledge related to psycho-physical well-being.

In addition to being associated with more conscious choices and activities, information design and, as well, design, through the connection with medicine, can help in the communication of diseases, both for treatment and preservation.

The aim of the paper is to introduce the methodology and, as well, the firsts results of an ongoing research which focus is the divulgation of medical-scientific knowledge on Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) and epigenetic factors, which technical data have been translated into different king of devices able to relate people everyday life with the managing and prevention of this pathology.

Roberta Angari, Department of Architecture and Industrial Design, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"

Roberta Angari is an Italian graphic designer. In 2015 she graduated in Design for Innovation at University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. In 2020 she obtained a Ph.D. degree in Architecture, City and Design - Design Sciences at University IUAV of Venice with the dissertation “Kono - Analysis and design of a digital archive of visual communication”. Main focus of her line of research are data visualization, digital design and digital archive - knowledge acquired during her academic path.

Since may 2020 she has a research grant entitled “Scientific Design for Medical Research”, with tutor Carla Langella, at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” - Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (DADI).

At the same Department, she is Teacher Assistant of the course “Visual identity for Cultural landscapes” and “Ethic Communication”, both held by Daniela Piscitelli.

Gabriele Pontillo, Department of Engineering, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"

Gabriele Pontillo is an Italian product designer. In 2015 he graduated in Design for Innovation at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. In 2019 he obtained a Doctoral Research Fellowship in Environment, Design and Innovation at the Department of Engineering of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. Main focus of his line of research are parametric design, medical design, and advanced manufacturing – knowledge acquired during his academic path.

The Ph.D. course with industrial characterization has allowed him to carry out and consolidate his research activity, as well as at his University, also at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería y Diseño Industrial (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain) and a company from Campania, based in Gricignano di Aversa, to design a system of innovative orthopaedic devices through parametric design.

Carla Langella, Department of Architecture and Industrial Design, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"

Architect, Associate Professor of Industrial Design at the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", where she teaches Bio-innovation Design and Design for Scientific Visualization in the Master's Degree Course Design for Innovation and Industrial Design Laboratory 3 in the Three-year Degree Course of Design and Communication.

In the field of experimental design research, she investigates the opportunities to build hybrid paths that involve the most advanced scientific contributions in the design project to bring contemporary science closer to people's lives.

Since 2006 she founded and coordinates the Hybrid Design Lab (www.hybriddesignlab.org), the design laboratory dedicated to the mutual relations between design and science with particular attention to the experimentation of biomimicry in design and the integration of designers in the development processes of new materials to which the specific Designer in lab project is dedicated.

Daniela Piscitelli, Department of Architecture and Industrial Design, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"

Architect and graphic designer, she is associate professor of Industrial Design at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" where she deals with Communication Design, with attention to emerging scenarios and cultures such as Asia and Africa. The research is focused on design for emergency, with attention to the new emergencies of contemporary life, on the themes of visual ecology and on contemporary languages and visual cultures.
Former President of Aiap, World Regional Representative for the International Institute for Information Design, Secretary General of ico_D, member of the Board of Directors of SID - Italian Society of Design. She has been part of the Study Commission for the identification of public policies to support and develop design established by Mibac and of the table on design of Miur.
