‘The inclusive way’ hackathon – inclusive wayfinding and pedagogy

Abstract

This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges for learning about and building skills for inclusive practice through a two-day, multidisciplinary, collaborative hackathon. ‘The inclusive way’ brought together students and staff from different disciplines and study levels, people with disabilities and industry professionals. Working on-site, project teams explored an inclusive wayfinding brief, developing and appraising prototypes for inclusive practice in response to the physical site and its immediate surroundings. This presentation reflects on the hackathon as a pedagogic approach, highlighting its potential and limitations for communication and information design education in the 21st century.

Jeanne-Louise Moys, School of Design, University of Leeds

Dr Jeanne-Louise Moys is an Associate Professor in the School of Design at the University of Leeds, UK. Her research interests focus on typography, graphic communication and inclusive design.

Faustina Hwang, Biomedical Engineering Section, School of Biological Sciences, University of Reading

Faustina Hwang is Professor of Interactive Systems Design in the Biomedical Engineering Section of the University of Reading’s School of Biological Sciences. Her research interests are in accessible computing and the design of technologies to support health and wellbeing.

Ugo Marsili, School of Literature and Languages, Department of Languages and Cultures, University of Reading

Ugo Marsili is a Lecturer in Modern Languages. He is the British Sign Language lead and the Diversity and Inclusion trainer for his Department. He works as an audio-visual translator and his main interest is media accessibility and inclusive teaching for people with hearing and visual impairments. 

Richard Nunes, Department of Real Estate and Planning, Henley Business School, University of Reading

Richard Nunes is Associate Professor of Planning and Sustainability in the Department of Real Estate and Planning. His research interests revolve around the governance of sustainability transitions, taking an interest in how and why environmental attitudes, risk perceptions, and associated ecological behaviour vary across distinct social and stakeholder groups, different biophysical settings, and diverse places.

Adrian Tagg, The School of Construction Management & Engineering, University of Reading

Lead for Building Surveying at the University of Reading, lecturing in building pathology and commercial surveying practice with both practice and research interests in Commercial Property, Planned Preventative Maintenance and Inclusive Environments.

Carolina Vasilikou, Manchester School of Architecture, Manchester Metropolitan University

Carolina Vasilikou is Senior Lecturer in Architecture and EDI lead in Manchester School of Architecture, a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester. Her research interests are in multisensory perception of (dis)comfort, architecture of health and wellbeing and design pedagogies for sustainability and climate literacy.
